Based in Southern California, Boom Shaka is keeping roots reggae music alive and well. Founded way back in 1986 by singer/songwriter Trevy Felix, Boom Shaka has developed a serious following over the years. They have toured the world and have released a series of albums since their inception.

Trevy Felix is the lead singer and plays guitar. He is accompanied by his brother Bass-I on bass, Lester Fari on lead guitar, Shaka Man on drums and Little George on keyboards.

Boom Shaka’s music is incredible. They have great lyrics, heavy bass lines, sweet guitar licks and beautiful harmonies. If you thought that all the best reggae music was recorded in the 1970′s, then you haven’t heard this group. Boom Shaka will blow your mind.

Michael C. Ford is the first poet to record at the Hen House. He has recited his poems with music accompaniment on two different projects thus far. The first had John Densmore, a Hen House veteran, drumming while Ford read a poem about the history of the American drummer. Ford has a wonderfully expressive voice and a great delivery. His writing is intelligent and very witty. Ford often draws from history and politics as subject matter. Ford’s work was recognized in 1998 when he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and in 1986 when he was nominated for a Grammy. His latest project at The Hen House has him reciting one of his poems with a full band. Shotgun No Challenge is a young band with a lot of talent. Still in high school, these guys find time to practice and record their music even with homework and curfews. In fact, the drummer had to leave the Hen House early one night because his mother wanted him home. Shotgun No Challenge is lead by Andy Chen who sings and plays guitar. Ken Sugihara provides vocals and guitar. While Daniel Ogier plays bass and Joe Herrera is on the drums. They all rock hard. The drums kick, the bass bumps and the guitars slash. It’s plain to see that these young men love playing music. Westchester, LA based Shotgun No Challenge’s slogan is “westside softcore established 2001.” This band plans on taking their music to the top. Their next stop is the Sunset Strip.

Swagger is a self-described pop-punk-emo-music band. The group consists of Daren on bass and lead vocals, Nick on guitar and lead vocals, Mark on the drums and Andy on guitar. These teenage musicians find time to play and record their music while still in high school. Swagger has been together already four years now and they big plans for the future. This band is hungry and they’re just about ready for a record deal.

Ray of The Wine’s blend of Persian, Moroccan, African, Indian and Western music is at once earthy, mystical and seductive, as traditional rigor meets improvisational freedom and complex, passionate melodies couple with relentless grooves. Reza is a master of traditional Persian stringed instruments like the Tar, Sehtar and the bowed Tarmanche and Kamanche, as well as the bamboo flute known as the Ney and the Daf, a hand drum. The CD was produced by The Door’s drummer John Densmore, who also played drums, and features a stellar international ensemble of players. The group recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Old friends Gene Bowen and John Densmore recently joined forces to lay down a few songs at The Hen House. Bowen had written the songs many years ago and was very excited to finally bring them to life. With Densmore, formerly of The Doors, on the drums, Jimmy Hazz on the bass and Art Ellis on the soprano saxophone, Bowen had all the necessary pieces in place to create three classic songs. Bowen plays the guitar as well as sings his very inspiring and thought-provoking lyrics. Their music will take you back a few decades and remind you of a time when songs were like poems, full of heart and soul. Lonnie is the songwriter, lead vocalist and bass player for his band, Weapon of Choice. Lonnie was voted one of the top five bassists in the 1996 issue of Bass Player Magazine, Funk category.
Lonnie Marshall has performed on recordings of Tone Loc, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Fishbone and many others. Performing live, he has played with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chaka Khan and Queen Latifa to name a few. His tunes will have your feet tapping, head nodding and fingers snapping. A truly gifted musician, Lonnie created some of the best music the Hen House has heard to date.
