Based in Southern California, Boom Shaka is keeping roots reggae music alive and well. Founded way back in 1986 by singer/songwriter Trevy Felix, Boom Shaka has developed a serious following over the years. They have toured the world and have released a series of albums since their inception.
Trevy Felix is the lead singer and plays guitar. He is accompanied by his brother Bass-I on bass, Lester Fari on lead guitar, Shaka Man on drums and Little George on keyboards.
Boom Shaka’s music is incredible. They have great lyrics, heavy bass lines, sweet guitar licks and beautiful harmonies. If you thought that all the best reggae music was recorded in the 1970′s, then you haven’t heard this group. Boom Shaka will blow your mind.

This unit that I designed and built uses a PIC16F684 micro, 3 AAA batteries, a solar cell array and a motor to automatically open the chicken house door every morning. “Morning” is detected when at least 30 minutes of dark is followed by at least 30 minutes of light, this is important to avoid false triggering due to torches, headlights, shadows etc.
The software also gives the motor a little 100mS “jiggle” every 30 minutes to reduce the possibility of ice causing a major jam.
Micro stays asleep for most of the time, and only wakes up every 2 seconds (due to a watchdog) and counts the number of wakeups to ensure that a light sample is taken every 4 minutes. Only a continuous sequence of 8 light or 8 dark readings will set or clear a day/night flag. Current consumption is around 10uA most of the time, and then around 500mA for 4 seconds during the motor operation. The door is opened until the limit switch is reached.
2 buttons (on the right hand side of the enclosure) allow for manual opening and closing. Any press of the buttons causes the PIC to come out of sleep immediately, ensuring instant reaction to button presses.
The door is opened by the motor and a simple pulley wheel with fishing line attached to the door. The door can’t be closed automatically, so it must be done manually while pressing the “close” button to unwind the pulley while the door is slid across by hand. The motor has a built in 300:1 gearbox to ensure high torque and low speed.
If the automatic opening function fails to reach the limit switch within 8 seconds, the motor is switched off anyway and the LED gives a “blink-blink-blink…….blink-blink-blink…..” to warn the owner of a jam. Any button press resets that condition.
The solar cells provide enough energy for several openings per day, so should be fine for the expected 1 op per day!
Enclosure is an IP67 rated box with a transparent lid. The only “breach” of the enclosure is a 0.5mm hole for the 0.4mm fishing line to exit.
All electronics and solar cells are sprayed with conformal coating, so a little damp shouldn’t be a problem.

Ray of The Wine’s blend of Persian, Moroccan, African, Indian and Western music is at once earthy, mystical and seductive, as traditional rigor meets improvisational freedom and complex, passionate melodies couple with relentless grooves. Reza is a master of traditional Persian stringed instruments like the Tar, Sehtar and the bowed Tarmanche and Kamanche, as well as the bamboo flute known as the Ney and the Daf, a hand drum. The CD was produced by The Door’s drummer John Densmore, who also played drums, and features a stellar international ensemble of players. The group recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Old friends Gene Bowen and John Densmore recently joined forces to lay down a few songs at The Hen House. Bowen had written the songs many years ago and was very excited to finally bring them to life. With Densmore, formerly of The Doors, on the drums, Jimmy Hazz on the bass and Art Ellis on the soprano saxophone, Bowen had all the necessary pieces in place to create three classic songs. Bowen plays the guitar as well as sings his very inspiring and thought-provoking lyrics. Their music will take you back a few decades and remind you of a time when songs were like poems, full of heart and soul. The Hen House enjoyed the journey and so will you.-Hen House Studios is a record label and documentary film company in Venice, California. Liquid Sunshine formed about five years ago in the City of Angels. Lead by the husband and wife team of Richie and Pamela Williams, this band is like a family. The musicians are good friends as well as band members. Pamela is the lead singer and she brings a beautiful voice and a strong stage presence to the group. Richie is nothing short of explosive on the drums. Ralph Rivers plays bass, Mark Harden plays guitar, James Matthews plays keyboards and rhythm guitar, and Frankie Camano plays percussion. Liquid Sunshine has all the ingredients for success. They rock hard and excite the crowd, while playing to deeply emotional melodies and lyrics. Their show is the complete concert experience. This band is the real deal.

Many people ask us how we got the name H.B. Surround Sound. So after explaining it too many times, here it is for all that don’t know. All five of us grew up in Huntington Beach, leading to the H.B. Each member of the band was influenced by different as well as similar styles of music. While Jon Jon was pounding his bongos to his impressive reggae collection, Doug was learning as many Heavy Metal, MetallicA, NOFX, and Led Zepplin riffs that he could. Matt and Jake meanwhile were submerged into the Beatles, classic rock, and punk; while Mike was listening to everything and mastering it at the same time. In high school we all were deep in the local music scene as we still are today. This is where we got Surround Sound. All of the different varieties and styles of music and sounds we heard that surrounded us as we grew up now come out in our music. So we thought it would be the best way to have a name for a band, as well as, describe how we got to the style and sound that we have today. The style and sound that is, H.B. Surround Sound.-Hen House Studios is a record label and documentary film company in Venice, California. Aya Peard’s project was a reunion of sorts for this group of very talented musicians. Singer/songwriter Aya Peard assembled the group that hadn’t played together in over five years. With Phil Kettner on guitar, Michael Renninger on bass and Paul Pellegrin on drums and percussion, Aya Peard sang her heart out in our studio. Aya is a spiritual individual, practicing yoga on a daily basis. With the voice of an angel, Aya spreads her warm energy and mystical sounds to all those listening. Her songs are heart-felt, drawing from experiences of love and pain. The dreamy mood of their music will send you floating off to distant lands. Hen House Studios was pleased to be the place where Aya Peard’s music was discovered once again.-www.HenHouseStudios.com
