Michael C. Ford is the first poet to record at the Hen House. He has recited his poems with music accompaniment on two different projects thus far. The first had John Densmore, a Hen House veteran, drumming while Ford read a poem about the history of the American drummer. Ford has a wonderfully expressive voice and a great delivery. His writing is intelligent and very witty. Ford often draws from history and politics as subject matter. Ford’s work was recognized in 1998 when he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and in 1986 when he was nominated for a Grammy. His latest project at The Hen House has him reciting one of his poems with a full band. Shotgun No Challenge is a young band with a lot of talent. Still in high school, these guys find time to practice and record their music even with homework and curfews. In fact, the drummer had to leave the Hen House early one night because his mother wanted him home. Shotgun No Challenge is lead by Andy Chen who sings and plays guitar. Ken Sugihara provides vocals and guitar. While Daniel Ogier plays bass and Joe Herrera is on the drums. They all rock hard. The drums kick, the bass bumps and the guitars slash. It’s plain to see that these young men love playing music. Westchester, LA based Shotgun No Challenge’s slogan is “westside softcore established 2001.” This band plans on taking their music to the top. Their next stop is the Sunset Strip.

Stalking Roxy joined LA’s underground music scene in early 2001, with youth on their side and the love of punk, alternative rock, and bright third-wave ska in their hearts. Lead by Deziree Zuniga, a powerful and charismatic front woman, this 6-piece band has created the catchiest, ska-influenced music to leave California since the third-wave ska boom. Stalking Roxy’s heavy lean on rock while still blasting away with intense horns instantly brings comparisons to No Doubt, Save Ferris, and Mealticket –yet the band maintains the ska feel throughout with nods to Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug and Catch 22. After releasing their first six song EP, ‘Jake’s Fury,’ in June of 2002, Stalking Roxy was asked to be part of American Ska history with the track “Ska Band” appearing on the STILL STANDING 4xCD box set (5000+ copies). Soon after, Stalking Roxy toured California extensively and truly found a voice all their own – conquering Los Angeles and Orange County by way of The Knitting Factory, El Rey Theatre, Whisky, Roxy, Allen Theatre, Troubadour, Viper Room, and legendary all-ages mecca Chain Reaction. Staling Roxy1s debut 11-track album “Look In The Mirror” shows how far these So Cal kids have come in 3 short years –catchy emotional lyrics, tight musicianship, a grinding rhythm section topped off by commanding, emotional vocals. Ray of The Wine’s blend of Persian, Moroccan, African, Indian and Western music is at once earthy, mystical and seductive, as traditional rigor meets improvisational freedom and complex, passionate melodies couple with relentless grooves. Reza is a master of traditional Persian stringed instruments like the Tar, Sehtar and the bowed Tarmanche and Kamanche, as well as the bamboo flute known as the Ney and the Daf, a hand drum. The CD was produced by The Door’s drummer John Densmore, who also played drums, and features a stellar international ensemble of players. The group recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

* This singer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist was born and raised in Iran but has lived in New York for more than two decades

Old friends Gene Bowen and John Densmore recently joined forces to lay down a few songs at The Hen House. Bowen had written the songs many years ago and was very excited to finally bring them to life. With Densmore, formerly of The Doors, on the drums, Jimmy Hazz on the bass and Art Ellis on the soprano saxophone, Bowen had all the necessary pieces in place to create three classic songs. Bowen plays the guitar as well as sings his very inspiring and thought-provoking lyrics. Their music will take you back a few decades and remind you of a time when songs were like poems, full of heart and soul. Lonnie is the songwriter, lead vocalist and bass player for his band, Weapon of Choice. Lonnie was voted one of the top five bassists in the 1996 issue of Bass Player Magazine, Funk category.
Lonnie Marshall has performed on recordings of Tone Loc, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Fishbone and many others. Performing live, he has played with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chaka Khan and Queen Latifa to name a few. His tunes will have your feet tapping, head nodding and fingers snapping. A truly gifted musician, Lonnie created some of the best music the Hen House has heard to date.
